Decker's family moved to Louisiana when she was nine. Decker then won a local talent competition for her version of "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" by Patsy Montana. Decker's family moved from Louisiana to Georgia in summer 1995. She'd started writing songs, and she was making regular trips to Nashville and making rounds of record labels and music publishers looking for a deal. In her early teens when she was 17, the Big Yellow Dog Records representative was able to hear her voice and started selling her songs to labels and artists. Decker's demos, which were reviewed by Mercury Records president David Massey and passed on to L.A. Reid of Island/Def Jam group affiliated labels group L.A. Reid was able to agree Decker to a contract. Jessie James released her debut album in August of 2009. The album was self-titled album. Jessie James enjoyed a modest amount of success and Wanted was able to reach the Top 40 on the Singles Charts. Decker thought of herself to be a country performer in the past was surprised that her album was not promoted or focused at a mass audience. Decker battled with the label to get more control of her music after two of her singles did not succeed. Her subsequent album, Boys in the Summer was a more traditional album. Decker's album was titled Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was canceled by Mercury following two singles that didn't chart on chart for country.
